Next Season:
"Ten Million Black Republicans"

By Steve Gold and Tom Ferriter

In the context of American theatre history, Ten Million Black Republicans is an extension of the evolutionary process begun in the late 1950s, with Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, that continues up to the present time in the plays of August Wilson.

In their plays, Ms. Hansberry and Mr. Wilson have portrayed African-American lives of economic hardship and deprivation, populated with individuals trapped outside the mainstream of our culture in a near-powerless struggle to change the inequities of society. Ten Million Black Republicans examines another facet of American life: the increasingly large, well-educated and affluent portion of a new population attempting to navigate into the cross-current of a predominately white, over-privileged, American upper class; a subject that is yet to be explored by today's playwrights.

Stageplays is proud to have developed and intends to produce Ten Million Black Republicans this coming season. We strongly believe that the present socio-political climate in our country urges a theatrical examination of the issues presented in Ten Million Black Republicans; and we expect that our production of this play will stimulate an informed and timely dialogue between the theatre-going electorate and our nation's political leaders.
